Ron Galella

Ron Galella has been widely recognized as the most famous and controversial celebrity photographer in the world, earning him the nickname "Paparazzo Extraordinaire" by Newsweek, and "Godfather of American Paparazzi" by Time and Vanity Fair. Galella's notoriety has been increased by several events with mythical characters of the star system, including two legal battles with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, a broken jaw at the hands of Marlon Brando, a severe beating by Richard Burton's bodyguards and the incarceration in Cuernavaca, Mexico Galella's photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco, the Tate Modern in London and the Helmut Newton Foundation Museum of Photography in Berlin Some of his most popular photography books are Photographs of Ron Galella (Greybull Press) and Disco Years (PowerHouse Books). thyme was awarded Best Photo Book of 2006 by the New York Times. Galella has recently dedicated himself to cinema with Smash His Camera, a documentary on his life and career directed by Oscar-winning director Leon Gast (When We Were Kings, 1996). Premiering at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Smash His Camera received the Grand Jury Award in the U.S. category. Documentaries. Born in New York, Ron served as a photographer in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. He later enrolled at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles where he earned a degree in photojournalism. Ron Galella dies on April 30, 2022 in Montville, New Jersey.
