At the tail end of a pandemic and economic recession, artist and photographer Florence Montmare embarked on a photographic journey, through the U.S., to explore the traces of the climate and health crisis. 'America Series' is her first monograph and is a collection of photographs taken in 2021 – 2022, while traveling from the East Coast to the West and back in an electric vehicle, made into a makeshift studio.

While charging the electric vehicle, Montmare encountered and photographed people from all walks of life, while discussing topics of the environment, hopes and dreams for the future. Not only is the population continuing to evolve as new immigrants make the US their home, the landis also physically changing, as a result of the climate crisis we are facing. The westward route is one of aspiration and opportunity — a reflection on the topic of immigration and diversity — and includes Native, African American and LGBTQ perspectives and voices.

The work touches upon urgent current topics: climate, sustainability, the energy crisis and the electrification agenda. Against a backdrop of a uniform man-made urban landscape, with the repetition of strip malls, fast food chains and billboards urging people to consume more, the work also highlights the economic difference in America.

Vienna born, Swedish/Greek/American artist Florence Montmare creates photographs, films, performances, installations, while exhibiting her work internationally. Previous exhibitions include 'Scenes From an Island', Fotografiska New York (2020-2021), Helsinki Photo Festival (2020), Bergman Center Gallery (Sweden 2019), and Ivy Brown Gallery (NewYork). She was an artist in residence at Ingmar Bergman Estate and is represented by Ivy Brown Gallery, New York. Her work has been exhibited at FRAC Lorraine, Casino Luxembourg, Saarland museum, Centre d’art Contemporain du Luxembourg, and the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain, among other places. She previously held the position of the Head of Cultural and Public Affairs at the Swedish Consulate General in New York. She is based in New York and Stockholm.
