This work focuses on the indigent people of East Harlem, a complex neighborhood with a profound history. The title, "Manual Labor", refers to slavery. Allah's people, Black Americans and the entire African diaspora throughout the Americas, to this day still haven't received reparations, or any meaningful reconciliation, for the centuries of manual labor they endured in the fields of America. As a photographer, the streets are his field. He is a "blue-collar" artist, and photography is his form of labor with a manual camera.

These are analog photographs taken in a digital era where artificial intelligence is moving photography in an unprecedented direction. People don't know what's true, what's real, or what's AI. His work is real. For some people it's too real. But he is a documentary filmmaker first. This work is a time capsule of a neighborhood eroding through gentrification. Night and day the homeless roam aimlessly, heavily policed, addicted to drugs and rejected by society.

Despite the problematic past and turbulent present, this book finds the light in the darkness. His lens encompasses hope and optimism. Through this work we find beauty where it was thought not to be. This work depicts the strength, power, resilience and the indestructible spirit of those who've been cast away in a far country, even though it is their own.

Khalik Allah (b. 1985) is a New York-based photographer and filmmaker who practices Camera Ministry with an eye as open as his heart. The resulting work has been described as "street opera" and noted for its beautifully visceral humanity. After a number of short films that reflect relationships formed through portraiture, Allah advanced his artistry with the feature-length documentary "Field Niggas" (2015), shot at nighttime on the corner of Harlem's 125th St. and Lexington Avenue. This corner also served as the basis for his first photography book "Souls Against the Concrete", published by University of Texas Press in 2017. Allah continued with "Black Mother" (2018), an ecstatic expression of reverence and realities across Jamaica. This award-winning film has been seen in festivals, museums and schools around the world, and was further released in the UK and the US through distributors Dogwoof and Grasshopper Film.
